The newest residents to join Pickering and Ferens Homes are delighted with their new properties, after the housing association for the over-60s renovated four, Grade II listed almshouses in Patrington.

Pickering and Ferens Homes, a registered Hull-based charity, amalgamated with the charity Linsdall’s Hospital, allowing the housing association to acquire the four almshouses which were built in 1843, in order to renovate and modernise them, breathing life back into a historic, local property.

The amalgamation saw substantial improvements carried out on four, Grade II listed, almshouse bedsitters on Welwick Road in the village. The properties had been vacant for five years and were in great need of refurbishment.

Pickering and Ferens Homes, in association with local-based Brian Fell building contractors has converted the four properties into two, two bedroomed bungalows with gas central heating systems. The project was designed by Gammond Evans Crichton Ltd Chartered Architects.

Husband and wife Jack and Pamela Stevens, along with their new neighbour Jill Turner, are the lucky residents who have now moved into the properties. Pamela said: “We were living in a caravan when we saw these fantastic buildings were being renovated, so we applied but we genuinely didn’t think we would get one.

“We were so happy when we found out we would be getting the keys to the new property, the buildings are so amazing and we have been researching their history.

“Everyone at Pickering and Ferens Homes has been so good to us and we can’t wait to move in and spend some time with our new neighbour.”

The Stevens were delighted to meet their new neighbour, Mrs Turner.

Mrs Turner added: “The buildings have been finished to such an excellent standard and they are well situated for the shops and on a bus route into Hull.

“I met Jack and Pam recently and I am looking forward to having a cup of tea with them when we all get moved in.”

Roger Elliot, director of Pickering and Ferens Homes, said: “These properties were uninhabitable before we started work but they have now been refurbished to a very high standard.

“They are a prestigious part of Patrington’s history and we hope the new residents enjoy living here as much as we have enjoyed bringing these historic buildings back to life.”
