One of the UK’s smaller housing associations has proved that bigger is not always better after being named as one of the top social landlords.

Pickering and Ferens Homes (PFH), which specialises in later life housing, has been named the 19th best social landlord in the country as part of 24housing magazine’s annual Top 50 Social Landlords list.

Judges commended the Hull-based not-for-profit provider for adopting efficiency measures rather than cost savings, after cutting operating charges by £170,000 without compromising on service output.

Claire Warren, chief executive of PFH, said: “We are thrilled to be ranked so highly in 24housing’s list of the Top 50 Social Landlords in the country.

“PFH never signed up to the philosophy that bigger is better or best – we will always want to do what both ourselves and our stakeholders know to be right.

“We have achieved modest growth including 10% growth over the last three years, based on a dedication to being a beacon of best.”

PFH provides quality homes and services for older people, owning and managing nearly 1300 homes within Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.

24 Housing’s Top 50 Social Landlords List countdown is designed to celebrate the excellent work of the social housing sector’s very best landlords.

Claire added: “This high position on the list is not just a reflection of our housing expertise – it is also testament to the hard work of our staff team.

“We have moved from being a basic standard Investor in People organisation to Gold standard over four years and our assessor commented that the amount of growth and professionalism seen was outstanding.

“It is gratifying for our team members to be rewarded for their efforts. We hope our work throughout 2017 will see us climb even higher in next year’s list.”
