Our second annual Residents’ Show proved to be a huge success after more than 150 people converged on the Guildhall for a day to remember.

Following on from the success of last year’s event at the Mercure Royal Hotel, Pickering and Ferens Homes listened to feedback from residents to ensure this year was even bigger and better.

On the back of last year’s event, we established a Residents’ Show Committee, comprising of residents and our staff, to work together on organising the event – they made joint decisions on everything, from the buffet options through to how the sound and staging should be set up.

The Residents’ Show was hosted in the banqueting hall and reception room of the city’s grandiose Guildhall and provided residents with opportunities to access complimentary support services, with 12 local organisations and agencies attending to talk to residents.

We also organised a series of workshops including arts and crafts sessions, hanging basket demonstrations and budget workshops with our Finance team.

Claire Warren, Pickering and Ferens Homes’ Chief Executive, said: “The Residents’ Show was a huge success this year and I was very pleased with the number of residents who got involved.

“It proved to be an informative and enjoyable day and we are looking forward to making next year’s event even bigger and better.”

As well as the workshops, residents were also treated to songs from the Gillshill Primary School Choir, an informative talk by Active Gold, which encourages older people to participate in sport, as well as a Fitsteps Latin ballroom taster session.

Claire added: “All of the activities and workshops were aimed at improving residents’ physical and mental health and wellbeing, as well as encouraging them to socialise and meet new friends through our Speed Socialising activity.

“We welcome ideas on activities and workshops that we could incorporate into next year’s event to continue to improve it year on year.”
