Sheltered Housing
Pickering and Ferens Homes is committed to being a leading and innovative provider of high quality accommodation and services for older people and older people with a disability, in housing need throughout the city of Kingston-upon-Hull and the East Riding.
Our sheltered schemes have therefore been designed to meet the requirements of this target group. Accommodation in our sheltered schemes is mainly in self contained flats with a lift. The bungalows and flats in the villages surrounding a scheme have access to a Scheme Manager and the communal facilities. A limited number of properties are provided for residents using wheelchairs.
There are a range of facilities to be found in our sheltered schemes such as: a 24 hour emergency call system, a communal room, assisted bathing facilities, a guest room, a laundry (with both washing and drying machines), a library, a quiet room, a communal kitchen and a hairdressing facility.
The Role of the Scheme Manager
The role of the Scheme Manager includes: helping new residents to settle in and explaining the facilities provided within the scheme and nearby; contacting residents on a regular basis to assess their needs; liaising with the resident, their family and other agencies involved to try to ensure that appropriate services are provided when required; and acting as an advocate on behalf of residents, with their permission, when a supplier or service has failed or a new one is required.
As well as offering practical support the Scheme Manager will advise and encourage residents to have or adopt an independent lifestyle. The Scheme Manager arranges for residents to take part in social activities such as excursions, social evenings and practical and active sessions such as keep fit classes, dancing and bowls.
The Scheme Manager is generally on duty from 8.00 am to 4.30 pm, Monday to Friday. They are not expected to be on duty outside of this time. For peace of mind and added security a 24 hour emergency lifeline service is provided should you require help. Two of our Sheltered Housing Schemes have resident Scheme Managers. Residents, their families, friends and agencies are asked to respect these hours and not disturb the Scheme Managers in their own homes.
