New £5.5m affordable housing development for over 60s in West Hull officially opened

An affordable housing development designed with older people in mind has been officially opened in the West Hull area.

The new £5.5m development, owned by leaders in retirement living PFH (Pickering and Ferens Homes), consists of 40 two bedroomed, purpose-built bungalows on Hawthorne Avenue East.

The new homes, built by Keepmoat, benefit from a range of environmentally friendly features designed to cut fuel bills and reduce pollution, including energy efficient boilers, cavity, loft and under floor insulation, and low energy lighting.

Residents welcomed dignitaries, including Emma Hardy – MP for Hull West and Hessle and Councillor John Black – portfolio holder for housing and infrastructure to an afternoon tea party to mark the occasion.

Ms Hardy said: “I was delighted to join the official opening of Hawthorn Avenue – yet another great example of community-led development by PFH.

“Friday’s event was a chance for the local community and project partners to celebrate the successful opening of the scheme, which ensures that local families can stay living in and contributing to the area that they were born in, grew up in or work in.

“This fantastic achievement highlights the acceleration of PFH’s sector-leading development programme.”

PFH, which was recently named one of the UK’s best social landlords, is now preparing for the phased handover to begin of 82 properties on its most recent development, Newbridge Village.

The bungalows surround the Integrated Care Centre, built on the old David Lister School site, and the association hope to have these fully let by autumn next year.
