East Yorkshire housing association welcomes community to cheer on England amongst efforts to tackle loneliness and isolation in older people

An East Yorkshire housing association is inviting the wider community to enjoy an afternoon of football-inspired fun as part of its efforts to further tackle loneliness and isolation amongst older people.

Pickering and Ferens Homes residents, who live at the Christopher Pickering Lodge sheltered housing scheme, on Hessle High Road, will be joined by neighbours to watch the England vs Wales game and participate in various sporting activities and quizzes.

Improving health and wellbeing through carefully tailored social activities is high on the associations agenda and involving the wider community is something it is looking to do as part of its plan to further build confidence and social skills amongst residents.

Claire Champlin, health and wellbeing manager at Pickering and Ferens says that the match is a great opportunity to bring the residents and the community together.

“Sporting events and big games are always a popular way to get everyone excited and involved,” Claire Explains.

“We recognise that loneliness and isolation is an issue that affects our residents and members of the local community and we are always striving to find ways to give our residents opportunities to get out and build new friendships.

“We find that events like this in particular are great ice-breakers for the residents and an easy way for them to socialise.’’
